In our recent ‘Be the Change’ webinar, we had the privilege of hosting Laura Skaife-Knight, Chief Executive of NHS Orkney, and international mental health speaker, Nick Elston. The conversation explored the theme of The Power of One and how individual actions can create a ripple effect that ignites change across an organisation. In this edition of Champions Connect, we’re excited to share some key insights, particularly those related to praise and recognition, and how you, as a Champion, can turn these into action.

How can small actions lead to change?

One standout example Laura shared was the simple yet powerful act of saying thank you to colleagues. She made it a personal challenge to express her appreciation to 3 to 5 team members each week, whether in person or by email. As a result, she noticed that others began adopting the same practice; therefore creating a culture of recognition at NHS Orkney.

How can you put this into practice?

  • Challenge yourself - and department managers in your organisation - to say thank you on Trickle at least once a week. Whether it’s sending a Fist Bump or posting a Shout About to publicly praise an individual, team, or a project's progress.

  • If your organisation celebrates long-term service, post a Shout About on Trickle to collectively celebrate employee’s milestone achievements and service commitments.

How can engagement be maintained?

When it comes to driving change, Laura emphasised the importance of keeping things simple. It’s crucial to understand how people feel and gather feedback, as these insights should guide every change initiative. She also pointed out that people need clarity on their roles in the change process so they can put forward their ideas.

Nick added that change isn’t limited to leadership positions and can happen at any level. He shared some common reasons people hesitate to speak up including: fear, lack of anonymity and people having concerns over associated time or budget constraints.

How can you put this into practice?

  • Regularly post Shout Abouts to communicate your organisation’s goals.

  • Use resources from your promotional pack to remind colleagues about Trickle and and encourage those to accept their invitation if they haven’t already.

  • Utilise MoodSense to allow people to anonymously share how they’re feeling in a single click.

  • Celebrate successes - no matter how big or small - to foster a sense of achievement.

How can Trickle support World Mental Health Day?

As many of you will know, the theme of this year's World Mental Health Day is prioritising mental health in the workplace, and highlighting the issues of burnout. Did you know, that Trickle can support your wider wellbeing initiatives?

If you have resources in place to support employee mental health and wellbeing, you could consider using MoodSense to gauge awareness of these resources. For example, you could post a MoodSense like, "I know where to find resources to support my mental wellbeing."

For organisations using our Flares feature, this is an excellent opportunity to remind people that anyone can start a private 1:1 conversation at any time to discuss workplace-related issues, including mental health challenges and burnout - all with optional anonymity.
